Art & Wine Faire

Winding down the weekend with Art & Wine at the Alameda Art & Wine Faire.

An interesting yearly fair located in downtown Alameda. There were two podiums with live music and people just wandering around checking out the different booths. It wasn't quite like the street fairs you see in Oakland Chinatown (there weren't enough booths giving away free stuff), but it was still very enjoyable. There also was plenty of good food to be enjoyed at high prices.

It's mainly a promotion by the Park Street Business Association. So drink and shop to your hearts content!

The Park Street Art & Wine Faire is Alameda's biggest event. The annual street festival takes place every year on the last weekend of July. This year's street fair is July 28 & 29, 2012. http://www.shopparkstreet.com/artwine.html

Google Nexus 7

After getting the Nexus 7 last week, I ran into a lot of issues.

The first issue that I ran into was the fact that the Nexus 7 only natively supports portrait mode. This means that the tablet UI found on most tablets could not be activated. You are forever stuck in a phone like experience limited to portrait mode.

I was able to overcome this after following some instructions on the xda developer forums. Of course for anything to work you have to have the system unlocked and rooted.

The main issue on the nexus 7 was the fact that flash was not working for Jelly Bean. Flash is officially not support on android 4.1 or Jelly Bean. This means you have to side load the application. The default browser, Chrome, also doesn't support flash for any version of android.

I was first using the Dolphin HD browser after side loading flash, but I hated the little Dolphin icon in the corner. This worked for a while, but after a short while the Dolphin browser also had an update. This update broke flash support for Jelly Bean devices.

They seem to really want to kill off flash for android in the future. I decided to try out the AOSP JB browser apk suggested by some people on the xda developer forums. I really missed the stock browser from ICS so this was a great alternative. Not only is the browser smoother, but it fully supports flash!

I highly suggest using the default browser instead of chrome if you can manage to install it on your system.

Rooted and Ready to Go!

To Root or Not to Root?

I was contemplating this question. Do I really need superuser access? The answer was an overwhelming "Yes!!". I need superuser access for things like Wifi-Tether, Adblock, etc.

Could I do without it? Of course! But it's so easy to root why not?
