Twinkles' Birthday Party 2010

Sunday, September 26, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
My sister invited me to her daughters birthday party which was held at the Oakland Zoo. It was a great venue for a birthday party because there was so much for the kids to do.

It was potluck style and the food was excellent. We also got a pass to walk around through out the zoo after the party. I think everyone enjoyed the event. I especially liked the JalapeƱo chicken wings.

The Oakland Zoo brought back nostalgic memories of goats eating pellets and ice cream cones. I'm glad they've kept the tradition alive.

Rooting the Droid X

Saturday, July 24, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
First of all let me explain a little bit about root. This is all pretty new to me as well so please correct me if I'm wrong. Root gives the user root access and the ability to be a super user on android phones. This is equivalent to having a jailbroken phone. It gives applications super user access so they can modify and change things they wouldn't be able to without it. I've used root to remove some of the bloatware that was installed with my phone, enabled wi-fi without having been charged, installed some applications that required root, and some other things.

Here's the guide on how to root I followed. You don't need a computer for this guide. I made some corrections, but the credit goes to birdman and qoncept.

If you want to learn more on how to actually do it.

QR Codes

Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments

What are QR Codes?

They are kind of like bar codes. The QR stands for Quick Response. It was invented by some Japanese company... which I'm sure you can search for, if you want more information about the background of the technology.

Anyways, with the modern smartphone revolution it seems like these things are appearing everywhere. They basically hold information that a person can scan with a phone and instantly receive contact information, a website, or a phone number. The usefulness of this remains to be debated, but for now it's a good gimmick that I might put on some business cards. Looks more like a magic eye puzzle than anything else.

You can create your own here : http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/
More information about QR Code: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code (yeah... wiki isn't a good reference site... you find a better one and link me.. I'm Lazy)

Droid X 8mp Photo Test: Pho & Ranch 99 Shopping Center

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Ahh.. nothing better than a bowl of pho for lunch. Though, a clearer 8mp picture would be nice. As you can see from the pictures from my Droid X the pictures are way to glowy, and the luminosity of everything is off. It's like one of those pictures that Asian girls take, or when you make the settings really bright on puri kura machines.

Anyways, the restaurant was the same as always. Service was decent. The food was good. It was packed today with a lot of people. I always like my pho filled to the brim with the red rooster hot sauce. I also like to put the sweet brownish sauce in the broth as well.

After lunch we went to the Ranch 99 Market place in Richmond. (3288 Pierce St. Richmond, CA 94804)

This is a small primarily Asian shopping complex located near Emeryville. It has a variety of restaurants and gift shops. It's quite secluded, but bustling. I guess when you don't want to travel all the way to Chinatown you can go to this shopping complex for Asian goods.

There are gift shops with your typical Sanrio type things that are very "kawaii", various anime goods, Asian books, and  other asian novelties. The Ranch 99 is an kind of Asian import store where you can find goods that your local grocery store might not have. After looking around for a bit, we purchased somethings at the Ranch 99, got some frozen yogurt by the ounce, and departed.

Shorebird Park Berkeley

Monday, July 19, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Today, I went to Shorebird Park in Berkeley with Annie. It's actually a pretty interesting place that's secluded from the busy streets of Berkeley. This is partially due the gray authoritarian bridge that steps over the busy freeway and a long isthmus that divides the mainland from this little peninsula.

The first destination that we adventured to was the pier that was located at the tip of the peninsula. The cool windy weather near the pier was a welcome exception to the heat wave that we have been experiencing lately in the Bay Area.

As we walked toward the pier we saw a small ground squirrel that didn't seem to be afraid of humans. It especially had an interest in the left over spicy chicken sandwich that we had left over from Burger King. We gave a piece of the sandwich to the squirrel and it literally fell in love with the burger. It seemed to enjoy the burger so much it fell backward every time it consumed a piece.
The pier was pretty busy. There were various people fishing, walking, and taking pictures. I was expecting it to be a little bit more deserted being a Monday and all. Located near the railings of pier are some small concrete stalls . They provide solace from the strong winds as well as a canvas for some local artists.

After we left the pier, we decided to walk toward the main attraction of the peninsula, Shorebird Park. Shorebird park is a small park that has a play structure, a small beach, an information center, barbecue pits, and a strange kids attraction called Adventure Playground.

At the park, we saw a dog named Tiger, who was as as stiff as a statue, as he pointed his head toward something in the grass. He was as poised as one of those dogs you see in cartoons. He eventually pounced on something that turned out to be some sort of rodent.

I had a great time exploring this little peninsula, seemingly secluded from the busy bay area bustle that it's so close to.

Squirrel Falls in Love with Spicy Chicken Sandwhich

This is a ground squirrel we saw today at Shorebird Park in Berkeley. It seemed to fall over backward due to an orgasmic infatuation with the left over piece of spicy chicken sandwich that Annie threw at him.

New Phone Droid X

Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Yay! A new phone! This is my new phone the Droid X. A smart phone that has Android 2.1 (Froyo = Frozen Yogurt 2.2 Soon), a 1ghz TI OMAP processor and a 4.3" screen, makes this transition from an iPhone painless.

Though I love this phone, I still have some issues with it... the Droid X is nice and all, but it has one small potential problem that might make it useless to me. It features the eFuse encrypted bootloader which makes it harder for hackers to install custom roms on the device. This also means that I won't be able to have root access to the device. Root access is like jail breaking your iphone.

I really like the phone hacking community and if this phone shows little or no progress within the next couple of weeks, I will definitely give serious consideration into switching over to the droid incredible or some other phone... The incredible has a simple rooting and rom flashing application offered by http://www.unrevoked.com/.

As for other phone news, I recently updated to ios4 on my iPhone 3g. It was a simple process and I decided to update because my phone had crashed and I had to restore it anyways.

Here are the steps that I took to restore the phone:
- I updated my itunes to 9.2
- I installed the official 4.0 firmware from apple through itunes with the update button
- I downloaded redsn0w 0.9.5 http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:rs9
- I downloaded the 4.0 ipsw that matched my iphone 3g from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
- I opened redsn0w and followed the directions
- I installed the ultrasn0w repo in cydia to unlock the phone (add the repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ to cydia)

I then restored a backup of all my data and wala completed
Remember if you have cracked ipas remember to reinstall the mobileinstallation file for 4.0

LA Adventure

Monday, July 5, 2010 Posted by Snow 0 comments
During the weekend, we (me, Joel, Mary, Julie, Aaron, and Rachel) went down to Los Angeles as a continuation of our supposedly yearly trip. You could say this year was a bit more crowded (with the addition of Julie and Aaron joining us) and stressful. The night before, Julie and Aaron decided to drop by a couple of hours before we were to take off. It didn't leave us enough time to get rested, and we ended up sleeping for most of the ride down to LA.

When we finally arrived at the LA convention center for Anime Expo, we didn't expect the pre-registered line to be extremely long. There were regular attendees and then there were cosplayers in the line too. Julie decided to use this time to 'get ready'. Since Julie and Aaron didn't pre-register and were too broke to buy their own tickets, we decided to do a switch-off to bring them into the dealer's room. For most of the convention, we like to stay in the dealer's room since it has a lot of cute figurines and merchandise. It does seem silly to pay $35 each just to go buy stuff.

For Joel, his enjoyment of Anime Expo was the large numbers of cosplayers. With his nice camera, he took a lot of pictures of different cosplayers. Of course, most pictures focused on Sailor Moon and her Sailor Scouts. I have mixed feelings towards cosplayers but I am still a fan of really well-made outfits. I wonder if the cosplayers ever feel tired and annoyed from posing all day.

After Anime Expo, we GPS'd our way towards our 'hotel' in Chinatown. When we checked out our rooms, we were slightly disappointed to see a very crowded room and bathroom, and hardwood floors. And since there were no carpets, it was the least bit likely for anyone to sleep on the floor. Each bed ended up with three occupants that left some of us unhappy.

After we settled in, we decided to head towards Japantown and maybe find some good food to eat for dinner. We browsed some shops and bought some snacks but we were still trying to decide on a good restaurant. In the end, we settled for a restaurant that had expensive food which most of us ended up disliking. Joel and Mary decided to go to the nearby supermarket and bought something else to eat for dinner. When everyone was done, we retreated back to our hotel room and tried to sleep through the hot summer night.

The next morning, Rachel and Mary woke up and went out to get everyone breakfast buns. After breakfast, everyone got ready and headed out to sight-see and browse the many stores in Chinatown. It was a nice day and everyone got a nice walking workout. I ended up buying a tiny bonsai tree because I forgot to buy one the last time I was there. It was a pretty fun day. The girls and I ended our tour by buying some pretty cakes from a cute cake shop. Too bad me and Mary's cakes were left behind underneath the table trash in our hotel room. It was just very disappointing since I didn't even get to taste mines!

Monday was our last day. Everyone had to wake up especially early so that we could go back to the Bay in time to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. After a long drive, we arrived at our destination. I was surprised to see so many people also going to the Aquarium. I thought they would be chilling at home or maybe at work. It was even more crowded when we entered the Aquarium. There were so many kids, I just knew my patience would be tested. But overall, I had a very fun experience at the Aquarium. I especially like the seahorses and jellyfishes.

I wish I can say our trip back was fun also. However, the traffic was so bad on a winding road that it proved very stressful for our driver. We didn't get back home until nightfall. I guess everyone else was also going home from an eventful Independence weekend, hence the traffic. Even with the negative emotions, I still had fun because I made some good memories with my friends and sisters. Maybe we'll do this next year too.. or maybe not. :)

Tokoname

Saturday, May 22, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
A hot summer trip to Tokoname with my family in Japan.

My host family decided to take me to Tokoname before I left Japan. It would be my last real trip with them before my journey back to America.

A little information about Tokoname:
"Tokoname has been associated with ceramics production since at least the Heian period, and Tokoname-yaki works from this period have been found from Aomori Prefecture in the north of Japan to Kagoshima prefecture in the south. By the Kamakura period, over 3000 kilns were active. During the Sengoku period, the area came under the control of the Isshiki clan, and later came under the rule of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

During the Edo period, the area around present-day Tokoname was part of Owari Domain. In the post Meiji Restoration cadastral reforms of 1889, the town of Tokoname was created. Tokoname was elevated to city status on April 1, 1954 by the merger of Tokoname town with the towns of Onizaki, Nishiura, Ono, and the village of Miwa. Chubu Centrair International Airport built on an artificial island offshore Tokoname opened on February 17, 2005, providing a major boost to local development." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokoname,_Aichi)

I had a great time. There were a lot of different shops that catered to the areas famous pottery. No, not the one with the wand, but more traditional tea pots and things of that nature.

The walk along the scenic town's back-roads was also very pleasant. They were very interesting because some pathways were adorned with pots that looked like jugs protruding out of the walls.

I think it's amazing how people can create such interesting structures with no apparent purpose.

King of the Hill

Tuesday, May 18, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Are all Apitas on a hill? It seems like they all are on some sort of precipice . What's an Apita, you ask? It's the local department store, a kin to Wal-mart, but like one combined with a mall.  A lot of these stores, from my experience, sit on top of a hill and you can see them from most points in the nearby neighborhood. I wonder if this is a trademark of the chain store.

Inside, there's usually a grocery store, a food court, several different kinds clothing stores, and restaurants.

Like with most companies in Japan, there seems to be a surplus of workers; unlike in America, where you're lucky to find one checkout stand open. Sometimes I wonder, as do many other people living in Japan from America and other countries, how can they afford to have so many workers? I mean there are always signs almost everywhere hiring part-time workers. I would be lucky to even find a job working at a Wal-mart back in America during this time of economic idling. They must be doing something right here in Japan.

There are a lot of other nuances of Japanese culture that can be observed in the workplace. Like once a person gets a job, it's usually hard for the person to get fired. The company usually tries pretty hard to retain the employee. There are also downsides to Japanese companies as well, but I don't care to go much into detail about this aspect of Japanese business.

The service in Japan is phenomenal; wherever you go the people are usually friendly and welcome you to their stores. I don't know why I found this to be such a shock, but in America the expectations you get from a worker at, say Wal-mart, tends to not be that high.

A man who won't dye for something is not fit to live

Monday, May 17, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Today, I decided to dye my hair. I managed to crawl over to the local drug store at about 1 in the afternoon, and grabbed the cheapest looking hair dye I could find. The product that I enthusiastically decided upon was the Gatsby High Bleach kit. It had a picture of a computer generated man, with an awesome head of hair that would make even the most reticent Northern European react in an envious rage. I purchased my dye kit and was ready to attempt my bleach blond transformation.

In an inept attempt to dye my hair, I fumbled through the Japanese instructions. I was amazed at my overall fluency and understanding of this detailed, comprehensive dying guide, though it might have been the large pictures.

My first attempt consisted of me pouring the solution randomly in streaks throughout my scalp. I wanted a textured highlight look because I didn't want the whole thing to come out in one color. This was a complete failure because my whole head started to burn within a couple minutes. I was forced to retreat and wash everything out before trying again.

My second attempt consisted of aluminum foil and wrapping the parts that I want dyed. I figured this would prevent the liquid from seeping into my scalp. This worked minimally, but some foil pieces fell off creating a mess.

Please take a look at the pictures and tell me what you think. I personally like the different shades, though some people might call it blotchy. This hair dye is dedicated to new beginnings.

If you wanna come an take a ride wid me

Sunday, May 16, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Today, I went with Shimon to fix up his little Mitsubishi Minica. Shimon really loves his little egg car and he was going to spruce it up by giving it an oil change, new spark plugs, and a new oil filter. I mean if it was his egg, he had to take care of it like if it was his baby.

While we were waiting for his car tune up, we went for a walk. It was an incredibly warm day; it reminded me why I needed to get the heck out of Japan before summer hit. We wandered and ended up at a nice stream.  The murky, brown stream was the place to be if you were a fish, insect, snake, or turtle. It was brimming with life. We saw turtles taking in sun while perched on the various rocks that managed to protrude just enough out of the water to provide a small secluded island. We also managed to spot a snake floating like a lifeless twig in the water, until it decided to go after one of the turtles. As I watched, I noticed it was some-what silent, and there was no one narrating this interesting event like I'm used to.

After fixing his car, we decided to just drive around. We ended up going to Hamamatsu. There is a mammoth shopping complex in Hamamatsu called the Aeon mall. It towers with an enormous parking lot of 3500 spaces that announces to everyone that it is the king of the prefecture, and no one should challenge its authority. Here we met an interesting person who was working at a mall booth. He was selling leather wallets and managed to catch that we were speaking in English. He was a fellow English speaker who was from Canada but lived in Japan most of his life. He said he was a surfer and worked at the Mall part-time. It's interesting how English speakers are drawn together in foreign countries.

Anyways, we continued on our journey and visited a couple of random beaches, and I ended up getting a haircut. Long story short, windy, sand, got a bad haircut, but was okay for the price, didn't look like the picture... hope this isn't a run on sentence.

There's no place like home, Toto....ro

Saturday, May 15, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
There really is no place like home, and my home for the year was Toyohashi. I'd like to travel back to Toyohashi more, but it's always a burden financially, especially since I'm currently unemployed. But I really had to go back at least once more in order to say goodbye to everyone and pick up some things. So, I decided to embark on this trek at the early hour of 3:30 in the afternoon.

I arrived in Toyohashi around 6 pm at the nostalgic platform from which I began this year-long journey. Toyohashi station was busy like always. People rushed out of the train as soon as the doors opened, like horses at a race track, politely, yet aggressively running toward the exit. I wasn't in a rush, so I just slowly followed the crowd and let a neatly dressed business man break the crowd as I hid in his wake.

Upon exiting the station I was faced with the dilemma of eating some time until I was able to get a ride from my friend Gabby. I wandered the familiar streets near the station and found myself getting back into my old work errand routine. I visited the bookstore I usually went to, to pick up supplies. Followed by a brief stroll to the dollar store, where I usually picked up supplies, and then I wound up back at my old apartment and waited for my friends who had replaced me at my previous job. Something must have happened at the apartment complex because I saw an ambulance pull up in front of it. I saw someone come out, but I didn't manage to see who went in or what happened. Reminds me of the old TV Show Emergency 911.

Anyways, I was picked up from my old apartment after some confusion with who was riding with who. After which, I headed toward Toyohashi University of Technology because they were holding their monthly party. I was apprehensive at first because I wasn't really up to socializing that night, but it turned out to be a really fun event. It was nice to talk to some old friends and meet new people at the party. I met a lot of new students and everyone was nice and welcoming.

After the party, I headed back to my friend Shimon's house. There we talked about life and what we were going to do with our lives until about 3:00 am. I think passed out in the spare room.

Blog Moved From Awardspace Hosting

I moved the blog from awardspace.com hosting. The server host for the mysql database was too unstable, so I decided to move the whole blog to blogspot. I will restore some of the old posts, but I don't know if I can manage to correct the timestamps. There seems to be a problem when searching for posts older than a year. Please me patient and use the archived menu to the left. I have also redesigned the whole layout of the site and I think it looks pretty spiffy. Anyways, Enjoy!

Trip to Tokyo Day 3

Monday, May 3, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Akihabara...
What can I say...
It's a nerd's dream.

There's Anime everywhere, cute maid girls everywhere, people cosplaying, floors and floors of comics, video games, and computers (did I mention the maid girls?).

You can really lose yourself here. I think I could spend days here just checking out the different sights, but I only had one day. It's not the first time I've been here, but there's just so much to see and do I felt like I only scratched the surface.

I also just like the feeling of being somewhere new, especially in a large city like Tokyo. I like knowing that there are tiny little stores and shops in every crevasse of the city. I like the feeling that I have almost an infinite amount of city to explore and I like knowing that in almost every building and every corner there's a person with his or her own story.

Sometimes I just like walking down different blocks to see what's there and to see something new. I did this a lot with Nagoya walking all over the place; sometimes I would discover a little oasis of parks that you would never known existed unless you lived in a certain neighborhood.
I think that in part is why I love Japan so much. There's always something new for me, somewhere left unexplored, and somewhere where I might never venture again. I have to take everything into my memories where they will exist for as long as I can retain them.

Trip to Tokyo Day 2

Sunday, May 2, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
After not sleeping on the bus all night we were finally in Tokyo. We were a little tired from not sleeping, but my host sisters were ready to attack the city and get some food.

What's the best way to start your day? With a good ol' Sausage McMuffin.

We had our breakfast and we were on our way to meet up with Ray. We were going to head back to his place for a bit to drop off our stuff and then we were on our way to the "Anime" convention.

It turns out that the "Anime" Convention wasn't really what it was. It was more of a "boy's love" convention. I should have figured this after seeing the crowd. There were so many fan-girls that I really didn't care that they were there just for guy on guy action. I mean what more can you ask for. Horny, nerdy, hot Japanese girls... come on.

I definitely would go back if I had the chance. There were some pretty cute girls in the crowd. I think a fan boy could really lose himself here.

Trip to Tokyo Day 1

Saturday, May 1, 2010 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Traveling to Tokyo from Nagoya on a bus in theory is a great idea. It's cheap, doesn't take to long, and you can sleep on the bus if it's at night. In theory it's a good idea, but have you ever tried sleeping on a bus?

Anyway, my host sisters and I were heading up to good ol' uncle ray's apartment in Yokohama because my host sisters wanted to go to an anime convention.

We were running a little late so we had to rush from Nagoya station to the bus registration area. We made it on time, after a few quick sprints, and there we were ready to embark on our adventure to the big T.

Man, Shimon lives in the middle of nowhere. I had to walk about 2 miles to get to the local train station in order to get back into town. This was no easy task considering I was still coughing up blood (which was due to the pneumonia that I didn't know I had at the time). I did enjoy the neighborhood though. It was very suburban.

Takeshima is a town in Aichi that used to be a very hot tourist city, but now what remains are old buildings that have seen the hardships of a fragile economy. Anyway, took a trip here with Shimon and the two new replacement Native English Teachers (Nancy & Teri). We had a blast visiting the little Shrine Island.

Another trip to Nagoya??

Of course, one can never tire of the big city. There was just so much to explore and today was one of the exploring days that Annie and I decided to take advantage of.

There was a discounted ticket if you buy one from Toyohashi station to Nagoya station, so that's what we did. There is also an all day subway pass on the weekends if you want to purchase that as well.
We decided to check out some different stops on the subway line in Nagoya. I have often loved the concept of just stopping at every stop and just going out to explore the neighborhood around the area. Every stop has it's own personality and secrets to unlock. If you ever have the chance, I suggest just stopping at every stop, even if just for a bit, and going out to explore the surrounding areas for a bit.

As seen in the picture we saw a nice display in a station to show people how to properly recycle. Recycling in japan is mandatory and can be complicated for the typical foreigner.

We were then off to Osukanon the technology/anime district of Nagoya. There are a lot of shops that sell old games, computers, and clothes. It's a great place to spend the day if you've never been there. It's also located to a lot of other interesting places that you can check out. We decided to check out Nagoya station after Osukanon. It was beautiful at night and there are so many shops underground that I sometimes forget there is a world above the shops. If you're a pokemon fan there's also a pokemon center that is a must check out.
