Early Snow Post Reno Trip

Sunday, October 28, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
We played in the snow on the way back from Reno. There was pretty decent snow fall and it seemed like the slopes were already up and running. If you're going to play in snow, you should always remember to bring gloves!

Oh No Another Trip to Reno

Friday, October 26, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Free hotel no weekend restrictions means I'm going to Reno! We stayed at the Grand Sierra Resort, which provided us with a free room and some gambling money. It was an interesting weekend. There were various conventions using the hotel and interesting people walking around. One of which was a 14 year old girl who asked us for our left over pizza and proceeded to eat it out of the pizza box after we said it she could have it.

I ended up losing $15 over the course of the weekend due to my roulette addiction, but over all it wasn't bad. There were random drawings for players card members through out the weekend in a kind of deal or no deal style show. A couple of lucky people won a few thousand dollars in cash from the free drawing.

Reno was a somber venue like always; a lot of pawn shops and check cashing places. These are telltale signs of a ghetto

The weekend was pretty fun, but uneventful. We were locked out of our room one night though. After watching The Dark Knight Rises, we decided to go back to our hotel room. Low and Lily left early because they were tired and couldn't sit through the whole movie. They had the only key, but it was okay because they were going back to the room. The only problem was they fell into a deep slumber and couldn't be woken up. We knocked, called their phones, and knocked again to no avail. It wasn't too big of a deal though, we just went to the front desk and asked for another key. I was just surprised when we walked in quietly it finally awoke them.

Scavenging the Old Office

Tuesday, October 9, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Our offices moved recently from Sunnyvale to Mountain View! There was a lot of stuff left behind that was going to be trashed so I decided to scavenge for some stuff. I found a great haul including a decent computer, cute mouse pads, and office chairs!

Vacaville Outlet Shopping

It's sad that most of the stores close at 6pm on the weekends.

Pentax FA F1.4 50mm Lens Bokeh Test

I recently received my lens from Amazon! I actually bought a used one from the Amazon warehouse, but they messed up my order so they ended up giving me a new one for the price of the used one! $280 Total for a 50mm f1.4!

It's a little soft at 1.4, but the bokeh is nice and creamy. Focusing seems to be off slightly, but this could be due to the shallow depth of field.

Disneyland: The happiest place on earth

Friday, August 17, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
I took a trip to Disneyland with some friends for my birthday weekend. I hadn't been to Disneyland since I last visited the place with my ex-girlfriend. It was as I remembered it. The heat though that weekend was pretty gruesome. I forgot about the Southern California heatwaves. I'm sure that Disneyland made a lot of money selling $3 bottled beverages. I know I must have spent at least $30 on drinks alone over the course of the weekend. But I was expecting this and why would you go to Disneyland if you weren't expecting to spend a few bucks.

There were a lot of people as expected, but the lines weren't too bad. This held true especially for the more "thrilling" rides. I have to say I had a disdain for vertigo, but I really didn't go on a rollercoaster for the longest time and it wasn't as bad as I remembered.

I think it might have been a more immersive experience if we all watched a marathon of Disney movies before coming to the theme park.

A spectacular fireworks show concluded the evening. I remember seeing a water/lights show at Disneyland the last time I was here. Anything that can capture the feeling that you felt when you were kid is worth the effort to obtain it.

Enjoying Ye Olde Renaissance Faire

Saturday, August 4, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Great Scott! Why are all these people wearing strange clothes and dreaming of a simpler, more steam punkish past? It's because of the 2nd Annual San Jose Renaissance Faire!

http://www.sanjosefaire.com/

No Flux Capacitor? No problem! All you need to do to get back to the 14thish century is to pay $18!

The San Jose Renaissance Faire is a great way to spend a Saturday! Although, the prices for commodities were probably converted from gold because everything was expensive! $9 for a Turkey Leg!

There was a great joust event that was held twice daily, things to buy, three stages where shows were held through out the day, food stalls everywhere, and people dressed up accordingly. I think the most interesting part of the faire was the joust. The show was pretty well put together, though as with many things in this day and age, it had a lot of advertising and self promotion. The faire wasn't as large as the website made it out to be, but I wasn't expecting too much. It's a good way to spend a Saturday.

Art & Wine Faire

Sunday, July 29, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
Winding down the weekend with Art & Wine at the Alameda Art & Wine Faire.

An interesting yearly fair located in downtown Alameda. There were two podiums with live music and people just wandering around checking out the different booths. It wasn't quite like the street fairs you see in Oakland Chinatown (there weren't enough booths giving away free stuff), but it was still very enjoyable. There also was plenty of good food to be enjoyed at high prices.

It's mainly a promotion by the Park Street Business Association. So drink and shop to your hearts content!

The Park Street Art & Wine Faire is Alameda's biggest event. The annual street festival takes place every year on the last weekend of July. This year's street fair is July 28 & 29, 2012. http://www.shopparkstreet.com/artwine.html

Google Nexus 7

Friday, July 20, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
After getting the Nexus 7 last week, I ran into a lot of issues.

The first issue that I ran into was the fact that the Nexus 7 only natively supports portrait mode. This means that the tablet UI found on most tablets could not be activated. You are forever stuck in a phone like experience limited to portrait mode.

I was able to overcome this after following some instructions on the xda developer forums. Of course for anything to work you have to have the system unlocked and rooted.

The main issue on the nexus 7 was the fact that flash was not working for Jelly Bean. Flash is officially not support on android 4.1 or Jelly Bean. This means you have to side load the application. The default browser, Chrome, also doesn't support flash for any version of android.

I was first using the Dolphin HD browser after side loading flash, but I hated the little Dolphin icon in the corner. This worked for a while, but after a short while the Dolphin browser also had an update. This update broke flash support for Jelly Bean devices.

They seem to really want to kill off flash for android in the future. I decided to try out the AOSP JB browser apk suggested by some people on the xda developer forums. I really missed the stock browser from ICS so this was a great alternative. Not only is the browser smoother, but it fully supports flash!

I highly suggest using the default browser instead of chrome if you can manage to install it on your system.

Rooted and Ready to Go!

To Root or Not to Root?

I was contemplating this question. Do I really need superuser access? The answer was an overwhelming "Yes!!". I need superuser access for things like Wifi-Tether, Adblock, etc.

Could I do without it? Of course! But it's so easy to root why not?

Kitten Chases Mouse at Work

Friday, May 25, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments

While I was working on an excel sheet... a kitten started to chase my mouse pointer. Why do I have a kitten on my desk at work? A co-worker brings in a bag of kittens every other week~! It's a great stress reliever! Though, I don't know how well it's working for productivity.

A Dinner Excursion

Sunday, April 29, 2012 Posted by Digital Katsu 0 comments
We felt the need to explore and diversify our dinning options so we checked out some places near Union City.

We decided to try out the Texas Roadhouse, but after waiting 20 minutes and not getting a table...We ended up at T.G.I. Fridays, on a Sunday! I guess it was a failed excursion, but we did enjoy our dinner.
